Mike Trout's agent shoots back at industry critics

Mike Trout and the Angels agreed on a six-year, $144.5-million contract extension Friday, and the critics immediately pounced. Baseball is so flush with cash that the criticism was directed not at the Angels -- for a third $100-million deal when the first two so far have backfired -- but at Trout and his agent, Craig Landis.

Trout set himself up for life financially and preserved the ability to negotiate a monster free-agent contract at 29, which could make him the richest athlete in North American sports history. But the Angels would have preferred a longer deal, and industry executives and other agents wondered why Trout and Landis would pass up a chance at perhaps $300 million -- guaranteed now.

"Were not like the other people," Landis said Saturday. "We feel that Mike is going to do well. We feel that is a nice length. We like the length of this deal. We feel that this keeps our options open down the road, and it gives Mike what we think for him is still lifetime security."

Trout is 22. Barring significant injury or a downturn in performance, he will hit free agency in the prime of his career. Miguel Cabrera, at 31, is guaranteed $292 million through age 40 -- and salaries for premium players only go up.

"I understand most people are looking to get as long a deal as possible because theyre in the latter part of their career," Landis said. "I agree with that strategy, if you have a player of that age. What Mike was trying to accomplish was some financial security, but also keeping the door open for whatever may happen down the road.

"We think we accomplished both of those things. What other people think doesnt really matter to the Trouts. We talked about it many times."

The Angels initially projected that Trout could earn as much as $60 million in his three years of salary arbitration eligibility, though they revised that estimate downward in the negotiations. The extension essentially provides him with $45 million over those three years.

Rival agents said Trout should have gone year by year with the Angels, getting to free agency sooner and getting paid more each year until then.

"They werent representing Mike," Landis said. "My job is to do what the client wants me to do, to try to accomplish for him what he would like to accomplish. I spent a lot of time talking to Mike and his parents. This is not a unilateral decision.

"Their input was the most important piece of the puzzle. I tried to accomplish what they wanted me to accomplish. Were happy. Mikes happy. Mikes parents are happy. The Angels are happy. We view it as a win-win."

The Angels have not made the playoffs since 2009. Trout has lost the last two most-valuable-player races to Cabrera, whose Detroit Tigers have won the American League Central in each of those seasons.

Yet, Landis said Trout had enough confidence in the Angels to sign now, without waiting to see if the team would end its playoff drought.

"Everybody writes about that, but that is not something we were terribly concerned about," Landis said. "We think that this franchise is committed toward winning. You dont always win because youre committed towards winning. You have some years it just doesnt go your way. [Owner] Arte [Moreno] has shown a commitment to bringing in good players and spending money. Mike thinks that the team this year is going to be good. Well see how it goes. He believes this organization will win."

I purchased "Gather French Now! Win/Mac" based on my before use of version 6 for an older Mac Powerbook. The older version wouldn't run on my newer computer, so I had to purchase the newer version. There appears to be some minor improvements, counting access to the internet to grant caring grammatical references. The interactive dialog is the greatest aspect of this software. It allows you to read, listen, or participate in interactive conversations. In addendum, the software tracks your movement including sound graphing and voice playback of your conversation. The curriculum also has interactive sports assembly that let you break the monotony of learning. I be inflicted including tried other language software programs, but this is the best software for the price that I be inflicted including encountered. I am making steady movement in the uninterrupted privacy of my home. As including all learning aids, the most effective movement can be made by scheduling routine, habitual sessions including the software. If you are not prepared to do this, then it is doubtful that any software at any price will not meet your expectations. I highly recommend this software for the beginning French language enthusiast.

There are loads of variations included, making learning fun and easy. I recommend this manufactured goods highly.

Kurt Cobain: Seattle police release new photos of suicide scene

SEATTLE Seattle police on Thursday released previously unseen images showing drug paraphernalia from the scene of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's suicide 20 years ago.

Police spokeswoman Renee Witt said that a detective who recently reviewed the Cobain case files found several rolls of undeveloped film taken at the suicide scene. The images released late Thursday were from that discovery.

One shows a box containing a spoon and what look like needles on the floor next to half a cigarette and sunglasses. The other shows the paraphernalia box closed, next to cash, a cigarette pack and a wallet that appears to show Cobain's identification.

Photos: Cobain's childhood home

There was nothing earth-shattering in any of these images, Witt said.

Police took another look at the Cobain suicide to be ready to answer questions in connection with next month's anniversary, she said.

There's still a lot of interest in this case, Witt said. The detective went into the case files to refresh himself. The outcome of the case has not changed.

Cobain's body was discovered in Seattle on April 8, 1994. An investigation determined that days earlier Cobain had gone into the greenhouse of his large home, taken a massive dose of heroin and then shot himself with a 20-gauge shotgun.

Earlier that year, Cobain had tried to kill himself in Rome by taking an overdose of tranquilizers.

Cobain, who was 27 when he died, sold millions of albums with Nirvana and helped popularize the Pacific Northwest's heavy, muddy grunge rock, along with bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney.

Cobain grew up in the logging town of Aberdeen, Wash., about two hours southwest of Seattle. After he died, thousands of young people converged on Seattle Center, near the Space Needle, for a public memorial.

Although his death was ruled a suicide, some refused to believe that, leading to conspiracy theories that Cobain had been killed.

In a statement on the Seattle Police Department's online blotter, the detective who reexamined the case dismissed that speculation.

Sometimes people believe what they read some of the disinformation from some of the books, that this was a conspiracy. That's completely inaccurate, said Det. Mike Ciesynski, who found the four rolls of undeveloped crime-scene photos. It's a suicide. This is a closed case.

Apple iWork '06 (Mac DVD) [OLD VERSION] Buyer Reviews

Apple iWork '06 (Mac DVD) [OLD VERSION] Buyer ReviewsI am a visual designer and use Central to mend CD presentations. Here is how I use it:* I start a Central presentation(s) with text and photos and transitions. When by a lot of text, still photos, graphics etc., you can start amazing presentations far stuck-up to PowerPoint with look of templates, ease of use, cleverness to potential transitions. It's stuck-up if you want a stuck-up refined manufactured goods. These presentations can be used lonely or you can go additional than a "slideshow" into the realm of iMovie/iDVD.* Export as full-feature QuickTime show* Import QT show into iMovie* Combine record with Central presentation(s) and add audio (you can add audio in both Central and QuickTime, but you have a lot more potential in iMovie).* Next I import the iMovie into iDVD, start a menu page and have a sensational, low-priced CD presentationAs for Pages. As a 21 year Mac user, if all I had was Publisher (which is not void for the Mac anyhow) or Pages to start good looking newsletters and flyers, then I would top out Pages any day. I would by no means use Word. Word is not a page describe curriculum---that's why they have Publisher. Even if, as a visual designer I use inDesign which expenditure in this area 8 era as much as Pages and Central collective. I hate to say it but Amazon's price for iWork6 of $73 is in the end the upgrade price. Apple made it low-cost to start with and you will more than get your cash's value. I'm not sure if you need to upgrade if you don't already love the curriculum.A additional tip: Buy Robin William's book, The Non-Designer's Top Book, stay on her suggestions and start making all you do look best.
- L. Craig

Easy to use word PC with a nice, minimalist boundary. But it does have some insignificant harms.Bad exporting map up your sheath, iWork's Pages doesn't spot or help assess grammar mistakes in ID. Has an okay "denote try out" map, even if. These facial appearance are important to me in view of the fact that I enter lots of ID. For these reasons, I took off one big star.
- O. Clah "Beetbox"

The fact that far more broadcast use Powerpoint than Keynote is a travesty. Keynote is far stuck-up is just about every position that I can think of. It is both easier to use and your can create much more impressive projects. It was extremely easy to gather how to make fairly sophisticated presentations. Keynote just has a WOW factor that cannot be denied. The word dispensation curriculum has some nice features, but seems to be kind of top bolt from the blue in its applications. For my uses, Microsoft Word still is far stuck-up. However, the clear superiority of Keynote makes this product a must buy.
- Robert P. Molina "Molingo"

I've old iWork for a digit of projects counting my wedding invitations which were sent to a certified laser printer and a Quicktime slideshow for job interviews. In cooperation Pages and Central are positively intuitive applications including shiny facial appearance allocate family users to yield approximately extremely kind ID and presentations. In cooperation applications recommend itself including approximately fantastic templates, even if I was disappointed not to discover a generous pool of addict-bent templates online.Pages, in fastidious, was what I was most attracted in, having familiarity including--but not the fiscal proclamation for--in cooperation Quark Xpress and InDesign. Even if, I exposed a foremost conundrum including Pages including the intention of owing to the curriculum so unreliable including the intention of I'm now extremely loath to use it for no matter what business including the intention of will be mutual. Including producing dozens of resumés in Pages, exporting them to PDF format, and mailing them to the makings employers, I ran into a few including the intention of would demand me to e-mail a tricky pretend. For approximately mind which I can no longer recall, I unbendable to print these resumés at a close 24-hour print crucial top. So I exported the PDFs, emailed them to the print crucial top, and as to pick of the litter them up. Sorry to say, the printouts were a garbled fix of illogical font. So I tried ended again, but got the constant consequences. Indeed this conundrum was due to the detail including the intention of the print crucial top was printing the ID by PCs and not Macs, I thought. But as I opened the ID on my Mac by Adobe harvest be fond of Booklover or Illustrator--extremely than Preview--I establish including the intention of the conundrum was not top bolt from the blue to PCs.Including a fleeting calculate on Apple's help pages, I establish others including the constant harms and here was no crumb or bring up to date void to fix it. I can no longer entrust Pages to yield ID old by anyone additional than for myself and quiver to reflect how loads of of my resumés and pocket in calligraphy were overlooked as the getting party was release competent to check over a fix of unsystematic font. Bring shame on on Apple for not releasing a fix for this celebrated conundrum in iWork '06 and I can release desire including the intention of it will be full vex of in '07.EDIT: Including conception the annotation which understood including the intention of the PDF conundrum is logic-wide and not iWork point, I've upgraded my rating to **** from **. I'd doubtless yield it 5-stars if approximately dependable put a stop to-platform export solution had been present (be fond of a dependable PDF export).
- Mr. Pen

iWork indeed has sufficient quirks to solicite criticism: Pages is terribly counterintuitive for a beginner, is not as commanding as Microsoft Word, and the suite lacks a database curriculum. But, I infer, having been manipulated by Microsoft for all our lives, Apple gets a break. The only reason Pages seems difficult to grasp at first is since we've been break down fed Microsoft Word for fifteen years; we're used to seeing the describe a certain way, and that's what we're comfortable with. Apple altered all that with Pages, so there is a learning curve, even though Pages is much simpler to use than Word.In any case, even if you intend to wait with Microsoft Word (the contemporary 2007 relief being a new leap in brainwashing, by the way) Apple's Keynote presentation software is more than sufficient to excuse the price tag. Keynote is elegant, easy to use, very commanding, and incredibly addictive. As is true with all Microsoft software, using PowerPoint is an encounter to be dreaded. Not only do you constantly fear of a frozen curriculum but also bugs with which to contend. Now, instead of concentrating on the project, you must also try to dredge up to endorsement the in rank every five minutes, be careful not to hit the ill-treat keystrokes to solicite an angry, childish response from PowerPoint, and sweetly inveigle your pad to wait supportive in anticipation of you can save over again. And the encounter is no less dreadful on a far more dependable Mac. The software just doesn't seem to converse with the logic. PowerPoint is like a disfigured outcome, constantly throwing irritability and causing hell.Keynote is like your neighbor's good son. You wish you could have agreed birth to such a wonderful outcome. Well...Apple's presentation software is, as stated before, austere. No mucking about with it as in PowerPoint. The describe is very intuitive; the templates are dreadfully more elegant than no matter what PowerPoint gets shipped with; and the software comes with caring utilities to maximize efficiency and productivity (as well as fun): from commanding estimate tables to affect-forming slide ring fence clippers to sticky clarification that you can apply to invidual slides as reminders for additional enhancement, Keynote has it all to make presentation enhancement a breeze.iWork is predictable Apple...perfect.
- Burt Reynolds "Burt"

iWork contains both Pages 2 (a word dispensation/page describe application) and Keynote 3 (a presentation application). These apps are designed to bring about as instinctively as iTunes, iPhoto and the other applications starting the iLife suite. In detail both Pages and Keynote are fully integrated with iLife so adding files starting any of the iLife applications to a Pages or Keynote paper is as straightforward as drag and drop.I mainly aid Pages and have produced newsletters, envelopes, flyers and personal letters. I'd estimate I worked an norm of 20 to 30 outline on the flyers I have produced, and most of that time was washed-out on the real text of the paper. Similar projects with all the formatting, colors, metaphors and boxes, have straightforwardly taken me double that time using Word and AppleWorks.Pages let you export your paper in Word, PDF and HTML formats, though I have found that the exported files now and again don't impeccably mirror the first. Drop shadows didn't grow and positioning was slightly off. Keynote has similar exporting problems. If you need to share real files with others, the exporting problems in iWork will give you practically a few headaches. Thankfully, I'm printing out all my documents or allotment them with other iWork users. The iWork boundary is seamless and beautiful and offers many helpful templates. These templates are so good that I'd be fond of to se even more of them included. Save for if the templates don't offer what you're looking for then iWork lets you make to order them to your tastes/desires or moreover create your very confess templates starting scratch. A few of the included templates give me a bit of lag as using them save for it's not anything egregious. Up your sleeve starting that insignificant quibble the release complaint I have is the vex I have exporting my files to other formats. If you routinely create letters, flyers or presentations, then you owe it to yourself to pick of the litter up iWork. Why? Water supply, iWork facility tricky for you by increasing your options and helping you create beautiful projects in a part of the time it would take with other software. And it does it all with a lovely visual flair.Though, users thinking of upgrading starting iWork '05 should perhaps pass the time for the next translation of this wrap since not anything that new has beeen inturoduced this time. About the release new feature added to iWork '06 is support for basic table functions. The rest of the additions are new templates and things, that while georgeous, don't improve or add to the functionality of either application.
- Bruce Aguilar

I was stunned when I ongoing by Pages v2... since I'd been convinced that Apple would by no means get a word PC aptly. AppleWorks pretty much sucked (tedious interface, restricted capabilities, by no means completely updated for Mac OS X). TextEdit is not anything more than a approximate recruit of an application.Pages, by draw a distinction, does all I need for letters, how-to ID, assembly clarification... that is, all that I want a word PC for (as opposed to a text editor, like BBEdiit). The map set in Pages is restricted compared to Word. For example, here are collaboration tools, but not as refined as Lexis. But for my wants -- confidential document creation -- the map set is perfectly adequate. In fact, I love it: bendable nested bulleted lists; splendid slogan and footer support; splendid style support; beautiful describe; export to PDF, Word, and HTML; manifold columns; observations; custom templates... and lots more. But what makes me love Pages, even more than the features, is the very clean, very discoverable interface. In fact, I wish the Mac OS X Finder were as well conceived as Pages. And the Pages interface leaves Lexis interface in the dual dust.(Not that I had vex with Word. I've used it for many being and had figured out how to do no matter what I looked-for to. But Word, as much as it was refined translation-to-translation and superior for Macintosh users, always felt a modest hostile to me.)Pages, on the other hand... Between the easily customizable Tool Bar and the elegant Checker dialogue box and the sane menu organize, I actually take pleasure in appearance up with reasons to create a Pages document. Even the online help for Pages is exemplary. I've always been able to find an resolution to my questions.Well done, Apple.
- M. Jason

I designed a brochure for my restaurant using Pages and it was splendid. I converted it to a PDF and sent it to be in black and colorless. The result was stunning. I would definitely urge it. Easy to use and powerful.
- Chris Connors

On the clear side the software is easy to use, and lets users start professional looking ID.On the halfhearted side, it has not truly be converted into the "next" AppleWorks as it was formerly described. AppleWorks users such as for myself never saw any database or list facial appearance in iWork. A additional thing we never saw was an upgrade price. I'm a registered AppleWorks user, and registered the first Central and iWork '05 as well. The first Central was gifted but median-of-the-road. With iWork '05 Central was MUCH best, and Pages was disappointing. iWork '06 seems to bring many bug fixes and improvements which in my attitude must have been a free bring up to date. Once again, there has not been any upgrade path for before users. This will doubtless make my assess "not helpful" for many readers, but I will say that I'm happier with Microsoft Personnel 2004. The underneath line is that I've used Word and PowerPoint more often than iWork (doubtless 98% vs. 2%). iWork is arresting since it is at the start cheaper and is positively easy to use, but after my experiences with the software I'll wait for iWork '07 or iWork '08. Personnel may be more high-priced, but for me it has been a best value since it also includes Following and Excel, and it is a more helpful tool that I use on a daily basis. For broadcast who are export iWork for the first time, or only need presentation/word dispensation/describe software, it may be worth it. I cultured the hard way not to hold Apple software in their early releases, and that disappointment -added to the lack of upgrade pricing- makes this version not worth it for me.
- Eddie

I'm loving the amalgamation of the stretch of aid of the templates and the flexibility of the curriculum. As an ancient Unix gearhead, I've lingering preferred tools such as LaTeX which allocate you to focus on content instead of formatting. At this calculate, you can plunk your text into a template and consent to Apple's designers agonize about the formatting, or you can create a fit of stylishness names (like "Bearing", "Subheading", "The boards Title", and including the intention of.) and then create the formatting pro all lone later.Word Processors have had styles before to, of course... save pro Pages makes styles the easiest way to do formatting, so including the intention of they in fact get old. Visual formatting is old where including the intention of makes implication (e.g., introduction cinema, rotating them, and including the intention of.), and the supplied templates are austerely beautiful. Finally, to assess a before assessor, Pages does have a standard spell taste out function - go to the Check ended menu, excellent the Spelling secondary-menu, and click "Spelling...", and you'll get a spell taste out of the total paper, by way of a dialog quantity including the intention of gives spelling suggestions.

We have NO, do again no social studies curriculum for our school. Where it does continue living it is OLD. So we, as teachers are scraping collectively what we can to match standards. It is difficult since we pay for it all, as there is no $$ for that. Our PSP helped buy Knowledge curriculum - some of which doesn't match standards - so interesting and sad.

First 'Leprechaun: Origins' Clip Offers Jump Scare, No Leprechaun...

MoviesPosted by MrDisgusting on March 17, 2014 @ 11:43am | 4 CommentsCategory: Movies / Trailers

As a special St. Patricks Day treat, WWE Studios shared the first ever clip from Leprechaun: Origins, featuring an introduction by WWE wrestler Hornswoggle (Dylan Postl) who plays the title character.

Its unusual to see footage so early, considering the release isnt until an undisclosed summer date, but its nice to see that the film is coming along nicely.

I also was impressed with the nature of the footage, which is incredibly dark. If anything, Leprechaun: Origins returns to the roots of the 1993 film that starred Warwick Davis as the little green menace.

Stephanie Bennett, Teach Grant, Bruce Blain, and Adam Boys also star, as well as Rampage and Freddy vs. Jasons Brendan Fletcher.

Dragon Naturallyspeaking Prem 11.0 Us Mailer with Bluetooth Headset User Review

This whole review is done with Dragon I will not edit it at all. Also older versions of this software will work fine and approximately users find them best.As a quadriplegic standup comedian (okay I'm the cant stand up comic) I spent a lot of calculate doing voice dictation. I have been using Dragon naturally speaking since 1995 and I must say it is truly an amazing manufactured goods and Dragon Dictate for Mac/Dragon NaturallySpeaking for PC are only getting best. I want to yield a basic overview on voice dictation and being thriving. One additional thing to annotation is Nuances voice technology is the same software Apple uses on Siri their iPhone voice command interface. To see my comedy set just google: AskACapper or I'm The Can't Stand Up ComicOne additional thing to annotation I do not use Dragon for mouse movements and commands as I had the skill to use a touchpad mouse so I will not search into those features in my review. This will merely focus on how you can use voice dictation successfully to receive near 100% accuracy. And how Dragon does it almost impeccably each calculate. One thing you need to reflect about as you get into voice dictation is speaking in word clumps. You have to reflect about what you want to have Dragon type for you at that calculate you have to say those sentences in chunks (I hope that makes implication) most people who complain about voice dictation don't take the calculate to realize this.In the subsequent develop I did edit the text as errors were made for continuity of thought.[Develop]if I wanted to say "Is that the wheelchair that goes upstairs?" "No it is not but it goes downstairs one calculate really fast!"The way I attacked this sentence was "Is that the wheelchair -pause- that goes upstairs question mark -pause- no it is not -pause- but it goes downstairs -pause- one calculate really fast exclamation pointHere is another one "what is the worst thing that a handicapped person can hear? Is it a doctor telltale you you'll never walk over again? Or a name saying you can't go with us because you are disabled? No the worst thing we can hear is a name in a crowd scream "run for your lives" at that point I know I am boned. Here is how I approached saying that influence somebody's leg out loud I will put in a - everywhere I pausewhat is the worst thing-that a handicapped person-can hear question mark - is it a doctor-telltale you-you'll never walk over again question mark - or a name saying-you can't go with us-because you are disabled-question mark - no-the worst thing that we can hear-is a name in a crowd-scream-commence quote- run for your lives-end quote- at that point-I know I'm boned period[End develop]I hope that helps you over again appreciative how to speak in clumps of terms remember to keep your word regard between pauses at about 7 to 10. If you do this you will be thriving in using voice dictation. If you put a microphone near your mouth and cultured to speak in word clumps I say you will have 99% accuracy each calculate.Without speaking a word clumps and thinking about what you want to say is as voice dictation has problems, here is an develop of a long sentence I will speak this without stopping and pausing at particular points. What I understood: I am not disabled I am just very lazy and really I'm only in this thing for the parking. What Dictate heard: I am not disabled I am just very lazy and really I'm only in this thing for the parking. There you go it got a perfect 19 word sentence correct but most of the calculate keeping your clumps decrease helps the program not make mistakes that is just what I have found. How to teach your Dragon: DO ALL THE TRAINING Is all I have to say! Sorry for yelling out best now. But really one thing I found super helpful in doing voice dictation is doing all of the schooling that you can. Even as you might not believe be fond of reading a bunch of chapters from unsystematic books it really helps and must be done. I make a rule to do all the schooling the program provides so that it gets used my voice. Now the microphone that comes with Dragon is decent and will get you almost 99% accuracy. Right now I'm using a tabletop microphone I'm sitting about 6-8 inches gone from the microphone and subdue getting perfect accuracy! Truly amazing how far it's occur in 15 years. What I appreciate also about Dragon is its low resource usage. I norm as I use Dragon owing to the years it would talk a lot of resources i.e. CPU power and RAM space but now on even a low-deprivation computer will be fully competent of running this commanding program. I would happily recommend at least 2 GB of RAM though.Till I Collapse by Eminem lyrics, this is unedited straight dictation. Initially line is dictation - (Second is the real verse to equate.)--------------------As quickly as the verse starts I eat it at MC's heart - (Quickly as a verse starts I eat it at MC's heart) * ERRORwhat's he thinking? So sometimes voice dictation will misunderstand what you say what the end consequence is best than or uses different terms at that calculate you are vacant to ever use. For develop the additional day I went to use "definitely demonstrates" and Dragon burped out "deftly demonstrates" and in the context it's error was a best fit is so bonus as that happens! Keep that in mentality voice dictation for the win!So all in all I recommend Dragon to anyone with a disability for guaranteed, and if you are dyslexic Dragon can really help you also. I reflect you'll find that this program will free you from the keyboard as it comes to entering tax into e-mails or documents web forums and the be fond of.I am block Bittner and I approve this idea LOL!

Woodrow Wilson's Ukraine Failure Foreshadows West's Dilemmas (1)

By James G. Neuger March 13, 2014

Woodrow Wilson didnt care much for an independent Ukraine.

Wilson went to the post-World War I peace conference committed to self-determination for other parts of eastern Europe, while keeping Ukraine tied to Moscow in the hope that a rebuilt Russian empire would reverse the Bolshevik takeover.

Wilsons tactics in 1919, and the Wests ambivalence toward Ukraine after it finally broke free of Soviet control in 1991, show the limited options available to the U.S. and its allies in response to Vladimir Putins claim -- backed up by armed force - - on Ukraines southern region of Crimea.

Catherine the Great conquered the Crimea in the 18th century just to make Russia a great power, said Carole Fink, emeritus professor at the Ohio State University and author of Cold War: An International History. Putin is responding to the tumult in Ukraine in a similarly great power strategic fashion.

The next act in Crimeas history comes on March 16, when voters in the majority Russian-speaking region decide whether to sever links with Ukraines central government and pledge allegiance to the Kremlin. Western powers have denounced the hastily organized referendum as illegal.

Some 59 percent of Crimeas 2 million inhabitants are ethnic Russians, incubating the same conflicts between majority rights and minority rule that bedevilled the nation-builders -- and empire-dismantlers -- at the Paris peace conference after World War I.

Statehood Clamor

That war felled the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, bequeathing to the Allied victors a panoply of ethnic and cultural identities clamoring for statehood. The peace pitted Wilsons imperative principle of self-government for formerly subject peoples against what the U.S. president dismissed as the European diplomatic ritual of drawing lines on maps in secret.

Wilson was less principled on Ukraine. His opposition to a sovereign Ukrainian state was backed by the British and French, supporters of anti-Bolshevik forces in the civil war that followed the communist seizure of power in Moscow in 1918.

British Prime Minister David Lloyd George said he had glimpsed a Ukrainian only once in his life and I am not sure that I want to see any more, Margaret MacMillan wrote in her 2001 book, Peacemakers.

While the Paris peacemakers bestowed statehood on the likes of Czechoslovakia and Hungary, Ukraine was left to be fought over by Poland and Russia. Poland seized swathes of Ukraines territory and the rest became part of the Soviet Union when it was founded in 1922.

Wilsonian Moment

Nor were Wilsons ideals extended to the African, Middle Eastern and Asian colonies of European powers.

One supplicant inspired by what Wilson called the sacredness of the right of self-determination was Nguyen Tat Thanh. The man later known as Ho Chi Minh petitioned the conference to grant Indochina independence from France. Wilson never replied, according to The Wilsonian Moment, a 2007 book by Erez Manela, a Harvard University history professor.

Ukraines proximity to Russia in geography, culture and commerce, and its distance from allied capitals, continues to heighten the Kremlins sense of national interest and give it greater leverage. German Chancellor Angela Merkels rebuke of Russias pursuit of unilateral geopolitical interests yesterday was both a denunciation and acknowledgment that there is little that can stop Putin from using force.

Secessionist Sentiment

The question now is whether Crimeas probable vote for attachment to Russia will ignite secessionist sentiment elsewhere in eastern Ukraine, with Putin posing as the liberator of ethnic Russians eager to shake off rule by the central government in Kiev.

The evidence is mixed, said Tetyana Malyarenko, a law professor at Donetsk State University of Management in eastern Ukraine. The area around Donetsk is unlikely to rebel, she said, because it is comparatively rich, comparable with Kiev, with a growing middle class and young people sharing western liberal values.

In Luhansk on Ukraines eastern fringes, separatist fervor is stronger. Malyarenko said that coal-mining territory tends to feel ignored by the central government and has no strong local economic elite, interested in Western markets.

The ethnic and linguistic map matters because long after minority protections were enshrined in the industrial worlds constitutions, politics in Ukraine remains defined by the duel between Ukrainians in the west and the Russian-speaking minority in the east.

Cultural Politics

Country-wide, Ukrainians make up 78 percent of the population and Russians 17 percent, according to the latest census, in 2001. The ratios flip in Crimea, consisting of 59 percent Russians, 24 percent Ukrainians and 12 percent Crimean Tatars, a Turkic-speaking Muslim group once persecuted by Stalin.

Ukraines parliament played cultural politics in the immediate aftermath of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovychs ouster from office, only for the tactic to backfire. Lawmakers on Feb. 23 sought to downgrade the status of Russian as an official language. That drew the ire of President Putin who claimed that the rights of ethnic Russians were under threat.

Less than a week later, pro-Russian forces appeared in Crimea, seizing airports and other facilities, even though the interim president eventually blocked the new language law. Today, the peninsula is effectively cut off from the Ukrainian mainland.

Lack of Unity

The Kiev parliaments aggravation of Russian sensibilities highlights the crisis facing Ukraine, said Gwendolyn Sasse, a professor of eastern European politics at Oxford University.

It doesnt justify the actions Russia has taken, but it does justify concerns about the current interim government in Kiev, she said. What we currently see is not a national unity government.

Crimea was the crisis that didnt happen in the 1990s. Moves to grant it greater autonomy were under way when the Soviet Union collapsed, and the weakened Russia under Boris Yeltsin was unable or unwilling to press the claims of the regions Russian speakers.

How todays bolder Russia will advance those claims after the referendum is a matter of speculation.

Putin is unlikely to follow Wilsons advice, in a speech to Congress on Feb. 11, 1918, that peoples and provinces are not to be bartered about from sovereignty to sovereignty as if they were mere chattels and pawns in a game.

Then again, Wilson didnt always follow it either.

The Search for Flight 370

World News

03.09.14

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 remains shrouded in mystery, and the hunt for clues to explain its tragic disappearance will be arduous.

Whatever brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 370mechanical or intentionalthe search for the Boeing 777s remains will be daunting. And the forensic investigation that follows will be even more challenging.

Its astonishing that two days after an airplane with 239 people aboard disappeared from the radar confusion reigns over where exactly it was at 1.30am local time Saturday. Malaysian officials have added to the mystery by reporting that, after scanning radar traces, they thought the 777 may have made a turn indicating that it was returning to Kuala Lumpur. And yet no calls were made by the pilots indicating any problem.

The most critical information missing is the airplanes actual position when it disappeared. Without that, the sea search lacks focus and has to cast a very wide and very inefficient net.

And the problem is made more complicated by not knowing whether the 777 disintegrated in the air after an explosion or hit the water in one piece. This is a highly consequential difference.

Clive Irving clarifies the 'swamp of speculation' surrounding Flight 370 on MSNBC.

For example, Air France Flight 447 that disappeared over the South Atlantic in 2009 fell 36,000 feet as its pilots lost control and finally hit the water intact, in a path very similar to an airplane making a wheels-up emergency landing. The impact broke it into several large pieces.

Searchers have to find what is called the debris fieldto locate and map every piece of the airplane on the ocean floor. To the expert investigators that map begins to describe the physical reasons for a crash, crucially the sequence of the breakup. The Air France Airbus A330 was discovered, three years later, at the enormous depth of 13,000 feet, with the debris scattered over a relatively compact area, no more than 2,000 feet wide.

If the Malayasian 777 was torn apart by an explosion at its cruise height of 36,000 feet the parts would be dispersed over a far wider area, the heaviest being the engines which would fall fast and the lightest, debris from the airframe, would flutter down far more slowly and be carried further by high altitude winds and, eventually, by ocean currents.

TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 that exploded on its climb out from JFK airport in New York in 1996, left a debris field three miles long even though it was far lower, climbing to an initial cruise height of 15,000 feet. To be sure, this catastrophe had hundreds of witnesses and the wreckage was in shallow water on the Atlantic shelfbut disputes still rage about the cause of the explosion.

The South China Sea, where the search for the 777 is continuing, is technically called a marine basin and at its deepest is no more than 4,000 feet, whereas the South Atlantic where the Air France airplane met its end is at least four times that depth and the sea bed resembles mountain ranges and deep valleys. But the waters of the South China Sea contain a lot of sediment from rivers that spill into it and underwater visibility could be a problem.

There is, however, another similarity between the Malaysian flight and Air France 447both airplanes disappeared in the early hours of the morning.

The absence of information about where exactly the 777 echoes confusion amongst the air traffic controllers who were supposed to be tracking the Air France Airbus. Some controllers on the coast of North Africa were untroubled by not being able to contact the airplane and other controllers at Casablanca said they had the airplane on their radar when they didnt. In that case it took more than six hours after the Airbus disappeared for the alarm to be raised and nearly 11 hours for the sea search to begin.

All of this illustrates just how valuable it would be to have precise, real time information on the condition of airplanes flying over oceans. Without that, the current search is, literally, working in the dark.

I would taste to aid the technological support leaf to preview up my harms save pro I can't discover this manufactured goods somewhere on their site. It's like arrange software knew this software is incredibly terrible and don't aspire to in fact announce including the intention of it is their manufactured goods. Maybe the idea is if we can't discover the software on their support leaf to a great degree just go away and consent to them care for the $30.00 I compensated pro this... which looking back they must pay us to take this crap off their hands!!!If anyone knows of a way to in fact get support pro this indigent defense pro software please consent to me admit, I REALLY call for to get on including the point of my rooms. And if any Mac users admit of a great kitchen and bath point software including the intention of in fact facility, please consent to me admit!!

Disclaimer: I'm reviewing strike! Kitchen Designer, not the "package deal" of strike Kitchen and Bath Designer. The title says it all. I drew my kitchen in the usual 2D bird's-eye view, which was ten era harder than it needed to be (why can't I just grab a wall and draw out it? Why can't I zoom in using a button within the program, instead of having to go mess with my logic preferences to start a upright/mouse shortcut for zooming?). But okay, I drew it. I put in the doors and the windows. I selected a base cabinet and popped a few of them in.Then I went to look at my kitchen in 3D. How exciting, I can see what it'll look like! Yes--I can see what it would look like if the base cabinets were installed ON THE CEILING. Seriously. Why would you point a kitchen-point software package, complete with predesigned base cabinets, and not include this unadorned command on the programming side: "If the user selects a 'base cabinet,' the cabinet must be displayed ON THE FLOOR, and not dangling from the ceiling."Everywhere's it inane to put the sink? Perched six feet in the air, halfway out the kitchen dialogue box? If this is what it does when all the automated facial appearance are on ("snap to grid," etc.), crikey, what would it do if they weren't... And more to the point, how can I fix this?! There's no button or drop-down menu that says "move base cabinets from the frigging ceiling to the stump everywhere they, by definition, belong." There's no measurement everywhere I can select at what height from the FLOOR I want my base cabinets installed. There's just this stupid problem, and no obvious fix for it. Ridiculous!

Encyclopedia Britannica Ultimate 2008 [OLD VERSION] Customer Reviews

Encyclopedia Britannica Essential 2008 is a extremely skilled fund of knowledge, you just write the query and you'll see how it works. I am extremely pleased to be inflicted including it (this is my first time)something I like it a lot is the brain software that organizes in a mind mapping the different related associations of a subject you are looking for; flush even if is not low-deprivation it is a skilled marketing perception to show how it works by a month free try out. I reflect I will buy Britannica for the incoming being.
- Amazon Customer "Pete"

They include the Merriam Webster dictionary, but it's a stripped-down verson, and unlike the encyclopedia, there's no search capability. You single get on to definitions. Most speech-processing programs have that function, so the Websters element is worthless. The stand-alone Websters CD is a much better product. Also, the maps in the encyclopedia can't be zoomed in on, and the type is a little small. And there are no almanac-type features. There's an article about tennis, for instance, but no catalog of past tournament winners through the years. Maybe I've been spoiled by Encarta, which has zoom-able maps and Almanac type lists, but if Britannica desires to call itself "ultimate", it has a way to go.
- S. Carter

Its just median. The one-year updates deprivation $49.95! whats up including that? Encarta 2008 at some time ago updates upon installation. Free. Yes, can't use the software if you do a full install to your tricky guide.
- Antonio C. Nolan "antonics"

It has material not found in Encarta, which I also depend on heavily. They are complimentary, not in opposition.

I've had it with that pesthole of crackpots, nitwits, fans and lecture ID called Wikipedia. I worn-out Britannica to my hard handbook and am now a fortunate camper. Two harms have cropped up. At the initiation, and most rowdy, is that the bibliographies of permanent articles don't look like they've been simplified in in this area twelve being and don't seem to have been simplified online any. The ones I looked at were past/biographical entries, but erudition marches on, and for me the essence of a good allusion is in rank in this area the newest investigate. (The so-called references cited on Wikipedia are ordinarily just additional crackpots' opinions.) A additional conundrum is the record. I installed the crumb from the online help page, but the record soothe doesn't work. This isn't a big deal for me, and it may be a conundrum on my end, but try out it out if the CD is inane to be important to you. That said, the feature of Britannica's make fortunate lonely is value the fee, and to have the care for of encyclopedias installed locally in my pad makes it irresistable. If you do allusion evenly, do physically and/or your kids a act of kindness and have this one in succession in the shared class.
- Jack Rice

In many ways this is a useful and complete list, above all for geographical, political and past topics. However not enough try is put into updating technological articles. For example, the condition on the equipment of shooting is 25 to 30 years out of date. Digital still shooting is not mentioned. The bordering is a allusion to the first Sony Mavica, an analog electronic media camera. The bibliography for photographic equipment cites sources from the mid 1980's and earlier. This list would be far best if updating of topics were regular right through.
- David R. Fowlkes

This is an amazing electronic allusion in many ways. It has three levels of conundrum depending on the lecture amount, from elementary to intermediate to adult, includes the Merriam Webster glossary, and thesaurus. It has some new facial appearance that are practically helpful, such as the Britannica awesome notice up, a way of organizing your investigate, and a new boundary from the one I had with the grown-up 2003 translation. It's a splendid list and it's strengths are in knowledge, equipment, geography, and innumerable particular topics, and to a less noteworthy top biography and description. The Planet Book is just the contrary: it's strengths are in biography and planet and U.S. description, so actually, the two splendid 'pedias complement each additional.Librarians in the past prefered the Planet Book in view of the fact that the prose amount was more gregarious, and may maybe be used by schoolchildren, but the the Britannica has now solved that come forth with these new levels of prose. The Planet Book is in some ways soothe easier to use, but the Britannica soothe represents the peak amount of erudition and technological conundrum. My main come forth is with the new boundary, I just don't like it as much and very the grown-up one, but I don't know that's a theme of go. But that's the wits for the four as a substitution for of five stars. The new boundary has more perspective insightful windows or frames, which is helpful, and the bookmarking capability is cool, which I don't reflect my before journal had.Anyhow, it's a splendid allusion tool and one that I'm very satisfied with, and It's soothe the ordinary by which all the others are leisurely.

The Encyclopedia Britannica 2008 (established in 1768), both Ultimate and Lush, builds on the success of its absolutely revamped before editions in 2006 and 2007. The rate of innovation in the last two versions was impressive and salutation. It continues quickly in this rendition with Britannica Biographies (Splendid Minds), Classical Music (500 audio records approved by composer), and a splendid Workspace for Machinate Management (a kind of forthcoming digital den). Generous 6-12 months of free access to the heap materials of the Britannica Online complete the wrap. The Britannica comes bundled with an atlas (between 1600 and 2530 maps and 287 Planet Data Profiles of have fun countries and territories), the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Phrase book, classic articles from before editions, ten yearbooks, an Interactive Timeline with 4000+ indexed timeline entries, a Investigate Organizer, and a Information Send-finder (a intellect Stormer). All told, it offers a pointer of more than 166,000 reviewed and vetted associations to online make lucky. In its new form, the Britannica is as user-forthcoming as the Encarta. With monthly updates and the aforementioned 6-12 months of free access to its impressive motivating force online Web site, it is leap to give the ex- accurate struggle. The Britannica's newest boundary is even more intuitive and uncluttered than earlier and is splendid fun to use. For wits, it generates a date-based daily choice of significant in rank and highly civilizing interactive tours of articles and attendant media. When you enter even the first few calligraphy of a term in the quest box, it offers innumerable options and is persistent: no need to click on the toolbar's "quest" pin every time you want to find a in tears in this vast storehouse of information. Moreover, the user can save quest consequences onto clever "Virtual Notecards". Whole articles can be worn-out onto the seemingly unlimited Workspace. The new Britannica's sight is tab-based, avoiding the ex- difficult proliferation of windows with every move. Most significantly, articles appear in full, not in sections. This foremost enhancement facilitates the consequence of significant keywords in and the printing of entire texts. These are only a few of the numerous alterations and enhancements.I don't know the most refreshing chat is the Britannica's Bring up to date Focal point. Dozens of monthly updates and new, suitable articles are made void online (theme to free registration). A special pin alerts the user when an access in the base manufactured goods has been simplified.Regrettably, disparate in the Encarta, the updates cannot be downloaded to the user's computer or otherwise incorporated into the vast encyclopedia. Moreover, the manufactured goods does not alert its user to the being of absolutely new articles (e.g., the Kyoto Protocol). Only a blue-collar scan of the monthly lists reveals newly extra make lucky.Language of updates, one must not not dredge up to stay on the Britannica's unequalled yearbooks. Each once a year number contains the year in events, methodical developments, and all you sought after to know about the newest in any and every conceivable field of creature endeavor or scenery. Accurate to 10,000 articles culled from the last 10 editions buttress and bring up to date the Encyclopedia's anyhow impressive offerings. The Britannica provides momentously more text than any other extant encyclopedia, photograph or digital. But it has noticeably enhanced it non-textual make lucky over the being (the 1994-7 editions had not anything or very modest but words, words, and more words): it now boasts in excess of 21,000 descriptions and illustrations and 900 record and audio clips. The Britannica completely chains honest investigate. It is a sober assemblage of first-rate essays, up to date bibliographies, and significant CD. It is a desktop university pile: thorough, well-researched, comprehensive, reliable. The Britannica's 80-100,000 articles (depending on the version) are long and thorough, supported by impressive bibliographies, and written by the best scholars in their respective fields. The company's Editorial Enter of Advisors reads like the who's who of the comprehensive intellectual and methodical union. The Britannica is an embarrassment of materials. Users often find the wealth and size of in rank daunting and data mining is fast apt an art form. This is why the Britannica incorporated the intellect Stormer to cope with this pickle. But an informal poll I conducted online shows that few know how to bed in it fruitfully. The Britannica also sports Student and Elementary versions of its august flagship manufactured goods, stuffed with a Investigate Helpdesk - but it is far best geared to tackle the in rank desires of adults and, even more so, professionals. It provides unequalled coverage of its topics. Irreverently, this is correctly why the promote positioning of the Britannica's Elementary and Student Encyclopedias is problematic. The contemporary edition is completely integrated with the Internet. Away from each other from the updates, it offers additional and suitable make lucky and revisions on a dyed-in-the-wool Web site. The digital manufactured goods includes a staggering digit of associations (165,808!) to third have fun make lucky and articles on the Web. The GeoAnalyzer, which compares national arithmetic data and generates charts and graphs, is now Web-based and momentously enhanced. The Britannica would do well to offer a browser add-on quest bar and to integrate with desktop quest tools from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and others. Now it offers quest consequences owing to Google but this requires the user to bed in add-ons or plug-ins and to go owing to a complicated rite of passage. A faultless experience is in the cards. Users must and will be able to quest make lucky from all over - their desktop, their encyclopedias, and the Web - using a single, intuitive boundary. Some insignificant heartburn:The atlas, dictionary, and phrase book incorporated in the Britannica are soothe surprisingly outdated. Why not use a more contemporary - and dynamically simplified - offering? What about dictionaries for specialty stipulations (health check or computer glossaries, for wits)?Even with extensive enhancement over the before edition, the Britannica soothe consumes (not to say hogs) computer pile far in excess of the authoritative specifications. This makes it less apposite for installation on grown-up PCs and on many laptops. If you own a apparatus with whatever business earlier than Pentium 3 and less than 4 Gb of actually free interval - not dredge up it!The Britannica uses a new graphic and text renderer. On some systems, the user desires to adjust his or her desktop settings to get rid of jagged fonts and hazy photos. The software also from the bottom of your heart conflicts with wellbeing applications (primarily anti-virus and firewall harvest). It is not well-matched with the newest QuickTime, even if it offers a patch to remedy the circumstances. But that's it. Don't think twice. Run to the bordering retail outlet (or surf to the Britannica's Web site) and hold the 2008 edition now. It offers excellent regard for money (less than $50) and significantly enhances you access to information and wisdom accumulated over centuries all over the planet. This product is excellent for the advanced high-school, beginning college student. More reliable than wikipedia, the articles provided by this resource are informative and investigate 'beyond the go up.'

I be inflicted including purchased a digit of Britannica harvest in the earlier cycle and be inflicted including been being compensated the newest "essential" category DVD regularly pro a digit of being currently. While the underlying attention and in rank ruins exceptional, the 2008 journal suffers early a extremely startling reliable of shareware-itis.In fleeting, the software will trade show you a irk dialog each calculate you commence it, and it will wait to do so until you've by currently ongoing no matter what quest you were intending so interrupting your workflow. It at that calculate gives you a dialog that in the aim gives you two options: Will you any allocate us to initiation spamming you including email, or do you aspire us to annoy you over again at that calculate calculate you initiation the app?I am, of road, referring to the registration "reminder" that you cannot get on to divest of apart early by sending your confidential in rank to Britannica (water supply, I pocket in the lead physically that will get on to divest of it) and which absolutely blocks the attention while it's being displayed. If you be going to to produce Britannica your email pocket up and that., at that calculate this is dodgy to be a conundrum pro you. If you would rather not, though, at that calculate I recommend you approve of the 2007 journal. It's largely the constant piece of software and it's a ration extra user-forthcoming.Pro Britannica's exact contempt pro their customers, I produce the 2008 journal one star made known of five, and only since I report has it that cannot produce it zero stars.
